Split rail fences
Split rail options
A split rail fence, also called post-and-rail, is the open fence you see along bigger yards and fields. It marks a boundary and frames a property without closing it in.
It uses less lumber than a solid fence, so it usually costs less per foot. The posts still do the work: we set each one below the frost line so the rails stay level.
- Two-rail and three-rail styles
- Wire mesh on the inside to keep dogs in
- Gates built to match

How we build
Why our fences don’t lean after the first winter
Connecticut ground freezes deep every winter and thaws every spring. That cycle pushes shallow posts up and out of line — so we dig below it.

Dug below the frost line
Post holes go about 42 inches deep, past the soil that freezes.
Concrete footings that shed water
Crowned at the top so rain runs off instead of pooling at the post.
Strung, leveled, measured
String lines and levels on every run, so lines stay straight and tops stay even.
Tested before we leave
Gates swing and latch, and we walk the line with you before we call it done.

FAQ
Split rail questions
Will a split rail fence keep my dog in?
On its own, no: the rails are too far apart. We add wire mesh to the inside of the fence, which keeps most dogs in while the fence still looks open.
How long does a split rail fence last?
It depends on the wood and on how the posts are set. We set every post below the frost line, about 42 inches down, so winter does not push the fence out of line.
Can you add a gate to a split rail fence?
Yes. We build walk gates and wider drive gates to match the fence, on posts set deeper to carry the weight.
