Privacy fences

Privacy fence materials

A privacy fence is a tall, solid fence, usually six feet, that blocks the view from the street and the neighbors. It gives you a real outdoor room: a place for the kids and the dog to play, or a cookout without an audience.

A six-foot privacy fence catches a lot of wind, so the posts have to be solid. We set ours below the frost line in concrete and space them right.

  • Solid-board wood: warm, natural, can be stained
  • Vinyl privacy panels: no paint or stain, rinse with a hose
  • Built tight, with no gaps between the boards

How we build

Why our fences don’t lean after the first winter

Connecticut ground freezes deep every winter and thaws every spring. That cycle pushes shallow posts up and out of line — so we dig below it.

  • Dug below the frost line

Post holes go about 42 inches deep, past the soil that freezes.

  • Concrete footings that shed water

Crowned at the top so rain runs off instead of pooling at the post.

  • Strung, leveled, measured

String lines and levels on every run, so lines stay straight and tops stay even.

  • Tested before we leave

Gates swing and latch, and we walk the line with you before we call it done.

What moves the price of a privacy fence

Every job is different, so we give you an exact price up front, and you approve it before any work starts.

  • Fence length and height, with six feet the common pick for backyards
  • Solid wood boards or low-upkeep vinyl privacy panels
  • Post spacing and depth, since a solid fence catches a lot of wind
  • The number of walk gates built into the fence run
  • Digging conditions like rocky or sloped ground, which we check at your free estimate

FAQ

Privacy fence questions

  • How tall can a privacy fence be?

Backyard privacy fences are usually six feet, which is enough to block the view while you stand or sit. Most Connecticut towns allow six feet in the backyard but limit front-yard fence height, so the rules depend on where the fence goes. We check the local limits and build to them.

  • Should I get a wood or vinyl privacy fence?

Both fully block the view. Wood gives you a warm, natural look and can be stained, but it needs some upkeep over the years. Vinyl costs a bit more up front and then needs almost none.

  • Will a privacy fence blow over in a storm?

A solid fence catches wind, so the posts are everything. We set ours deep below the frost line in concrete and space them correctly, so the fence is built to stand up to wind.
