Picket fences
Picket fence options
A picket fence marks the front of a home without hiding it. It keeps small children and pets near the house and gives a garden an edge.
Front-yard fences have their own height limits in most Connecticut towns. In the towns we have checked, they run from 3 to 4.5 feet. We check your town’s limit before we build.
- Wood pickets, painted or stained
- Vinyl pickets that never need paint
- Straight, scalloped or pointed tops
- Walk gates to match

How we build
Why our fences don’t lean after the first winter
Connecticut ground freezes deep every winter and thaws every spring. That cycle pushes shallow posts up and out of line — so we dig below it.

Dug below the frost line
Post holes go about 42 inches deep, past the soil that freezes.
Concrete footings that shed water
Crowned at the top so rain runs off instead of pooling at the post.
Strung, leveled, measured
String lines and levels on every run, so lines stay straight and tops stay even.
Tested before we leave
Gates swing and latch, and we walk the line with you before we call it done.

FAQ
Picket fence questions
How tall can a front-yard fence be?
It depends on the town. In the towns we have checked, front-yard limits run from 3 feet to 4.5 feet, and some towns want front fences partly open. We check your town’s rule before we build.
Wood or vinyl for a picket fence?
Wood can be painted or stained any color and has the traditional look, but it needs upkeep. Vinyl costs a bit more up front and never needs paint.
Will a picket fence keep a dog in?
It keeps many small and calm dogs in. For a jumper or a digger, a taller fence or a different style works better, and we will tell you so at the estimate.
