Gates

Gates we build

The gate is the hardest-working part of any fence. You open and close it every day, so it has to be built and hung right. The difference is in the build and the hardware.

A gate post carries weight and swings it back and forth all day, so it has to be set deeper and stronger than a regular post. We set gate posts below the frost line in plenty of concrete and hang the gate level.

  • Walk gates sized for people and pets
  • Wider drive gates for a mower, a trailer or a vehicle
  • Matched to your fence, with solid hinges and latches
  • A lock if you want one

How we build

Why our fences don’t lean after the first winter

Connecticut ground freezes deep every winter and thaws every spring. That cycle pushes shallow posts up and out of line — so we dig below it.

  • Dug below the frost line

Post holes go about 42 inches deep, past the soil that freezes.

  • Concrete footings that shed water

Crowned at the top so rain runs off instead of pooling at the post.

  • Strung, leveled, measured

String lines and levels on every run, so lines stay straight and tops stay even.

  • Tested before we leave

Gates swing and latch, and we walk the line with you before we call it done.

  • A walk gate for people or a wide double drive gate
  • The gate material, built to match your fence
  • Hinges, latches, and any locks you want on it
  • Gate posts, which need deeper holes and more concrete than regular posts

FAQ

Gate questions

  • Why does my gate sag and stop latching?

Almost always because the gate post was not set strong enough. A gate swings weight back and forth all day, so the post needs to be deeper and set in more concrete than a regular one.

  • Can you build a gate wide enough to drive through?

Yes. We build wide drive gates you can pull a mower, trailer, or vehicle through, usually as a double gate that opens from the middle.

  • Can you fix or replace just my gate?

Yes. A sagging or broken gate is one of the most common fence fixes we do. We can rebuild or replace the gate and, if the post is the problem, reset it.
